Description: Sound (French?), b&w, 30 min. A Hollywood-like story, with actors, about the struggles of workers in a steel mill in northern France. Their efforts to achieve better hours, wages and working conditions through collective bargaining and—when all else fails—a strike. The powerful strike sequence rather overpowers the basic message about how unions function in normal labor-management relations. Sponsor of the film was the Labor Information Division of MSA, which worked directly with European "free" unions, i.e., those not dominated and politicized by Communist leadership. The purpose was to help build union strength to assure that labor got its fair share of the reviving economy. A TOUGH DAY helped its director Victor Vicas demonstrate his readiness to direct feature films in Europe, which he soon came to do. He also directed a Hollywood version of Steinbeck's THE WAYWARD BUS. 1952. Produced and directed by Victor Vicas, Vicas Productions, Paris, for Labor Information Division, MSA/SRE.
