Description: Sound (English), b&w, 21 min. Machine: friend or foe? Do we really want to return to the "pleasures" of an earlier age, or shall we embrace modern technology for the benefits it brings? A short history of man's use of the machine and examples of how the machine-from simple hand power tools to forklifts and automatic lathesólightens labor, reduces fatigue and provides the products we need, at lower cost. Provided, the narrator observes, that workers share in the benefits of greater productivity. A light touch and some visual gags liven up the message. 1952. Directed by William Novik, camera Roger Fellows, music Pierre Barbaud, Societe Francaise Chronophotographie, Paris, in association with Film Centre Ltd, London, for MSA.
