Description: Silent, b&w, 9 min. Holland (The Netherlands): Amsterdam was first linked with the upper Rhine at the end of the last century, but since then, the old canal has become more and more inadequate. The ever-growing industrialization of the Rhine has brought a vital need for a better outlet to Dutch seaports. The canal passes through old towns where swing bridges delay traffic. When traffic is heavy, narrow locks may mean a wait of up to three days. Plans for a new, wider canal with the finest locks in Europe were drawn up as early as 1931, but the war came. Now, with the help of Marshall aid, the Dutch have been able to complete this master project for European trade. Footage shows the new locks, dredging operations, the building of retaining walls, barges moving through the canal, and the path of the canal through the country, swing bridges opening for passing barges, barges lining up in locks, and locks closing and barges moving out again. 1951? See "NEWSREELS(?) (series)" for more information. NARA ref. copy: VT.
