Sound (English), b&w, 27+ min. An overview of the struggle in Italy in 1948 between Communists and non-Communists. Depicts a (re-enacted) assassination attempt in 1948 on Palmiro Togliatti, the Italian Communist chief, as well as strikes and demonstrations that nearly paralyzed Rome. Also shows the work of the new Free Confederation of Italian Trade Unions, backed by America’s AF of L and CIO, in combating Communist influence among workers. Footage of Alcide DeGasperi making a speech at a mass meeting, followed by other political speeches. Shows Marshall Plan mobile displays, movies, puppet shows, books, and posters about the U.S. Depicts the influence of the Papacy and the Roman Catholic Church in the fight against Communism, and Italy’s joining the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Marshall Plan-supplied equipment is unloaded from a ship. Views of factories in operation, ships being built, and people shopping in stores promote the positive effects on Italy of Marshall aid.
